- Automatic Transmission
-
- Driving with an
- automatic
- transmission is
- easier than driving
- with a manual
- transmission
- because the
- automatic
- transmission shifts
- your car's gears by
- itself. There is
- no need for a
- clutch pedal or
- gear shift lever.
- An automatic
- transmission can
- sense the change in
- the car's speed,
- the load on the
- engine, the
- position of the
- throttle, as well
- as how far down you
- have pushed on the
- gas pedal. It
- "automatically"
- shifts gears
- accordingly.
- Automatic
- transmissions have
- been in use since
- 1939.
-
- Oil pressure runs
- the automatic
- transmission, and
- shift valves
- control the gear
- changes. All of
- this is determined
- by a device called
- a governor which
- determines the
- shifting of gears.
- Basically, the
- governor controls
- the oil supply,
- under varying
- pressures, that
- travels to the
- shift valves.
-
- Gear shifting works
- in the following
- way. The drive
- shaft that turns
- the wheels also
- simultaneously
- turns the governor.
- As the car goes
- faster, the
- governor turns
- faster. The
- governor sends oil
- to the shift valves
- via centrifugal
- force. As the
- shift valves move
- out, they transmit
- the oil to the gear
- shifting devices in
- the automatic
- transmission.
- Slowing down causes
- the shift valves to
- move in, which
- sends the oil in
- the opposite
- direction.
- Different gears are
- chosen by routing
- the pressure to
- both the brake
- bands and the
- clutch.
